On May 9, the 3rd Shaanxi University Class Psychological Counselor Growth Camp (Phase II), hosted by the Education Working Committee of CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee and the Department of Education of Shaanxi Province, was successfully held at the Lintong Campus of Xi’an Polytechnic University. With the theme of“Empowerment · Growth · Companionship”, the camp gathered class psychological counselor representatives from universities across the province for joint learning, exchange and growth. Led by Guo Tingting, a teacher from the Mental Health Education Center of Xi’an University, two students—Wang Di from Class 2303, Applied Chemistry, School of Chemical Engineering, and Gao Jiangze from Class 2405, Preschool Education, School of Preschool Education—participated in the entire camp.

The one-day camp featured a compact and fulfilling schedule. The opening ceremony kicked off in the morning, with speeches by university leaders of Xi’an Polytechnic University and work experience shared by outstanding psychological counselor representatives. All participants wore the“Peer Mental Guardian”badge and took a solemn oath. Subsequently,Professor Wei Pingfrom Xidian University delivered a keynote speech titled“A Boat That Saves Others Saves Itself; A Lamp That Lights the Way Shines Together — The Path of Helping Others and Self-Improvement for Psychological Counselors”.Director Liu Xinfrom Northwestern Polytechnical University shared insights on“From ‘Seed’ to ‘Forest’ — A Narrative of Growth for University Psychological Counselors”. The two lectures, integrating theory with practice, provided profound inspiration for psychological counselors’ self-growth and helping paths.

In the afternoon, separate sessions were held for teachers and students. In the teachers’ session, mental health education experts from universities including Northwest University, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Northwest University of Political Science and Law, Xi’an Shiyou University, Xi’an Peihua University and Shaanxi Railway Institute shared thematic reports, exchanging practical experiences on building peer empowerment systems and collaborative teams of psychological counselors. In the students’ session, nine workshops with diverse themes were offered, covering stress relief and empowerment, art therapy, sandplay experience, drum circle skills and OH-card painting. Psychological counselors chose to participate based on their interests. At the closing ceremony, participants shared their takeaways, concluding the day’s learning on a warm and powerful note.

Students’ Reflections

Wang Di (Class 2303, Applied Chemistry, School of Chemical Engineering)

Attending the 3rd Shaanxi University Class Psychological Counselor Growth Camp, I gained a great deal from the“Stress Relief and Empowerment for Psychological Counselors”workshop. In immersive group activities, we openly shared work pressure, clarified role boundaries, and learned self-care and scientific helping methods. I truly understand:only by lighting up ourselves can we warm others.

With the theme“Empowerment · Growth · Companionship”, the camp offered professional guidance, peer resonance and practical skills, deepening my understanding of the mission of a psychological counselor. I not only improved my peer communication and emotional support abilities, but also learned to rationally connect resources and maintain helping boundaries, making kindness more professional and companionship more powerful.

Facing the sun, moving forward toward the light. I will bring what I have learned back to my post. As a“spiritual guardian”of the class, I will listen to voices and pass on warmth with more professional competence and a warmer attitude, walking hand in hand with psychological counselors from universities across the province to build a solid defense line for campus mental health.

Gao Jiangze (Class 2405, Preschool Education, School of Preschool Education)

As the 3rd Shaanxi University Psychological Counselor Growth Camp concluded at Xi’an Polytechnic University, I feel a mix of joy in growth and a touch of melancholy.

The expert lectures in the morning were logically rigorous, laying a rational foundation for peer mutual assistance. In the“Stress Relief and Empowerment Workshop”led by Teacher Zhang Shengchen from Shaanxi Normal University, I experienced a profound spiritual journey. As a“mental education link”, I not only learned how to accompany others professionally, but also understood how to shine outward and gently embrace regrets inward through discussions on “roles” and “boundaries”. I miss the venue full of discussions and the irreproducible spiritual resonance at that moment. Perhaps the essence of psychological work is learning to accept the“imperfection”encountered in life.

With this growth mixed with a little regret, I wish we all continue to move forward firmly on our own paths. This experience, though tinged with sighs, is ultimately warm and beautiful.

Teacher’s Reflection (Guo Tingting, Mental Health Education Center)

As the leading teacher, I participated in this meaningful camp together with the two students. At the opening ceremony, when all participants wore badges and took the solemn oath, I deeply felt the great importance attached to university mental health education in Shaanxi Province, and developed more respect for the team of psychological counselors, the“peer guardians”.

The two keynote lectures in the morning left a deep impression on me. Professor Wei Ping’s phrase“A boat that saves others saves itself”accurately captures the core of psychological counselors’ work — self-care and growth are prerequisites for helping others. Director Liu Xin’s metaphor of“from seed to forest”vividly illustrates the development path of psychological counselors from individual growth to group influence.

In the afternoon teachers’ session, the experience shared by peers from other universities on building peer empowerment systems provided valuable reference for the training of psychological counselors in our university. After returning to school, we will integrate the concepts and methods learned into daily work, further optimize the training system for psychological counselors, and help more students grow while helping others and shine in growth. May we all be each other’s light, illuminating the way forward.
