Founded in 2014 and officially accepted in 2016, the Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Surface Engineering and Remanufacturing is affiliated with Xi’an University. It is jointly built with China National Heavy Machinery Research Institute Co., Ltd., Xi’an Shaangu Power Co., Ltd., and Shaanxi Tianyuan Intelligent Remanufacturing Co., Ltd. under an innovative"1+2+1"university-state-owned enterprise-private enterprise model. The lab supports the national Dual Carbon strategy, promotes the development of a resource-conserving and environmentally friendly society, drives high-quality growth of Shaanxi’s equipment manufacturing industry, and accelerates the development of new quality productive forces. It is a council member of several national academic societies and serves as the Xi’an Science Popularization Education Base.

The laboratory focuses on three core research areas: Surface Engineering and Equipment Life Extension, Equipment Remanufacturing and Additive Forming, and Intelligent Remanufacturing Technologies. It has built a high-level research team of 124 members, featuring a rational structure of senior experts and young backbones.Researchers aged 35–45 account for 51% of the laboratory staff. The laboratory has 37professors, 40 associateprofessorsand 47lecturers, with a well-balanced talent structure. The team covers materials, machinery, chemical engineering, intelligent sensing and other disciplines, supported by28 technology managers, 22 members of the Doctor Service Group, and 8 scientific-technological transformation specialists.Prof.Xu Keweiis theAcademic Committeechair and Professor Wang Canjunisthelaboratorydirector.

Equipped with metal 3D printers, hybrid additive-subtractive machines, 3D laser scanners, and other advanced instruments worth over 23 million RMB, the lab provides open and shared facilities for research and industrial cooperation. Its partners have built professional bases for laser remanufacturing and pilot testing, forming a complete platform for R&D and transformation.

Focusing on national major strategic needs and economic development priorities, the laboratory targets high-end equipment and new materials among Shaanxi’s six pillar industries. It actively promotes in-depth integration of the industrial, innovation, talent and education chains, and is positioned as a base for discipline development, technological breakthroughs and talent training of the remanufacturing industry in Shaanxi Province.Over the past three years, the lab has achieved fruitful research outcomes. It has undertaken 44 national and provincial-level research projects and 334 other research programs, with total research funding exceeding 41.4536 million yuan. A total of 135 papers have been published, including 72 indexed by SCI, 43 by EI and 20 in domestic core journals. Two monographs have been published, and 95 patents have been authorized, among which 64 are invention patents. The laboratory has won 16 provincial and municipal awards.Remarkable progress has been made in the transformation of industry-university-research achievements. It has jointly built the Changqing Oilfield Intelligent Remanufacturing Center with enterprises, as well as Shennan Remanufacturing Industry Center—the nation’s first professional remanufacturing base for coal mine equipment. The cumulative economic benefit generated by achievement transformation in three years has exceeded 346 million yuan. The laboratory has been approved to establish one Qinchuangyuan "Scientist + Engineer" team for Construction Machinery Surface Engineering and Intelligent Remanufacturing Technology, two Shaanxi higher education youth innovation teams respectively for Intelligent Remanufacturing Technology and Intelligent Additive Manufacturing Process, and one Shaanxi Higher Education Future Industry Innovation Research Institute for Equipment Surface Engineering and Intelligent Remanufacturing Technology. In addition, three university-level research teams have been set up: Advanced Surface Engineering and Equipment Life Extension, Advanced Manufacturing Technology Innovation Team, and Intelligent Perception and Control.

The laboratory is open to teaching services for the entire university, focusing on supporting practical teaching programs for majors including mechanical engineering and materials science. It covers curriculum practical training, undergraduate graduation design, as well as various national and provincial disciplinary competitions. In the past three years, the laboratory has held over 60 campus visits and 21 popular science lectures. It has provided instructional support for more than 600 undergraduate students undertaking graduation projects and organized 35 special sessions on technological process learning. Additionally, students have secured over 60 awards in major national competitions such as the National 3D Printing and other professional discipline contests.

Taking interdisciplinary integration as its feature and driven by frontier innovation and industrial demand, the lab provides key technologies, high-end talents, and demonstration models for Shaanxi’s scientific and technological innovation. It is committed to becoming a leading innovation hub, technology source, and talent base for intelligent remanufacturing in Shaanxi and even Western China.
