
School of Literatureis one of the longest-established humanities departments at Xi’an University of Arts and Sciences. Since launching its undergraduate programme in Chinese Language and Literature in 1990, the School has consistently upheld its motto of ‘Extracting the Essence and Promoting the Vast, Excelling in Learning and Setting an Example in Conduct’, and has put into practice an educational ethos that ‘valuing high moral character, academic excellence and practical skills, and modern civilisation’. This has fostered a positive academic atmosphere characterised by aspiration, ambition, a quest for truth and a commitment to action.
TheCollegecurrently offers four undergraduate programmes: Chinese Language and Literature, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Advertising, and Drama and Film Literature. The School has a total of 73 staff members, with 35% holding senior academic titles and 90% of full-time teaching staff holding a master’s degree or higher. The School boasts two recipients of the provincial ‘Sanqin Talent’ award, one provincial-level Distinguished Teacher, one provincial-level Outstanding Teacher, one provincial-level Teaching Team, two university-level Distinguished Teachers, and five university-level Teaching Role Models. The Chinese Language and Literature programme has been designated a Provincial Distinctive Programme, a Provincial Comprehensive Programme Reform Pilot, and a Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Programme Development Site, and is set to pass the Ministry of Education’s Level II Teacher Education Programme Accreditation in 2024. The International Chinese Education programme is the first in Shaanxi Province to achieve full coverage of overseas internships. The Advertising and Drama and Film Literature programmes have structured their curricula around industry needs, relying on a collaborative education model involving the university, government and enterprises to ensure a seamless transition from the classroom to the workplace.
The School actively strengthens international exchange and cooperation, having organised reciprocal academic visits for staff and students with South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Canada and the United States. It has consecutively hosted seven editions of the International Forum on Language and Cultural Studies and six editions of the International University Student Summer Camp, whilst establishing multiple overseas practical teaching bases.
In recent years, students have won 188 provincial-level and higher awards in Category A and B academic competitions; they have also completed 34 provincial-level and higher projects under the Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Programme. Students’ professional competence has been honed, their social recognition has increased, and their influence has grown.
The School focuses on cultivating applied ‘New Liberal Arts’ talent, deepening its engagement with the local community and serving regional development, whilst expanding international exchange and cooperation to continuously supply high-quality talent and intellectual resources for regional development.
