School of Biological and Environmental Engineeringdates back to the Biology Education and Geography Education majors established in 1981, boasting over 40 years of educational experience. It is dedicated to cultivating high-level applied scientific and technological talents to meet national and Xi'an local demands in biomedicine, urban construction and other fields.
Theschoolhas built four provincial and municipal scientific research platforms including the Shaanxi Aerospace Breeding Engineering Technology Research Center and Xi'an Large Heritage Sites Digital Protection Engineering Technology Research Center. It jointly established the Xi'an Qinling Research Institute with Xi'an Qinling Ecological Environment Protection Administration in 2012 and the Ecological Xi'an Research Institute with Xi'an Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment in 2022. It has co-built university-enterprise laboratories with 10 entities such as Xi'an Xintong Pharmaceutical and Huayuan Hechuang. In 2024, the Biomedical Industryschooland Biomedical Industry-University-Research Alliance were founded. Scientific researches are carried out in five key areas: biomedicine, aerospace breeding, Qinling Mountains conservation, eco-oriented Xi'an development and smart city construction.
Theschooloffers four undergraduate majors: Biological Sciences (Aerospace Breeding and Genetic Engineering), Biopharmaceuticals (Cell Medicine and Biomedical Engineering), Environmental Ecological Engineering (Urban Ecology and Qinling Conservation), and Geospatial Information Engineering (Smart City and Spatial Intelligence). Environmental Ecological Engineering was approved as a provincial first-class major in 2021. In 2025, the Biomedical Party Branch was selected as one of the fifth batch of university-level model branches for Party building work across Shaanxi Province.
Theschoolhas 48 full-time teachers, among whom 62.5% hold senior professional titles, 54.2% are dual-qualified teachers and 89.6% are PhD holders. All of them graduated from top universities home and abroad including Zhejiang University and Technical University of Munich. Twelve faculty members have presided over projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 100 research projects at or above provincial and municipal levels have been secured in the past five years. Fifteen teachers have been awarded titles such as Shaanxi Science and Technology Rising Star and Xi'an Leading Talent. The biomedical research team and large heritage sites digital protection team have been officially recognized as Shaanxi and Xi'an Qinchuangyuan "Scientist + Engineer" teams respectively.
Theschooladopts the diversified "3+1" talent training mode, prioritizes practical ability training and implements the full-student tutor system. In 2025, students participated in 16 competitions including the National University Students Life Science Competition and won 11 national awards and 31 provincial awards.
It adopts the classified "4+4+2" training system covering further education, internship & employment as well as innovation and entrepreneurship to facilitate students' career development. In 2026, the postgraduate admission rate hit 30%, with 39 students admitted to Double First-Class universities such as Northwestern Polytechnical University, Northwest University and Southern University of Science and Technology. Theschoolhas established partnerships with over 100 enterprises including Giant Biogene, Sinopharm Holding (Shaanxi), Kunshengyuan and Xinyatu to promote the integration of internship and employment.
