The School of Preschool Education, formerly known as Shaanxi Xi'an Preschool Normal School, began its early childhood education programs in 1955. At that time, it was among the first in the nation, the earliest in Northwest China, and the only professional institution in Shaanxi Province dedicated exclusively to training preschool teachers. In 2006, the school was fully incorporated into Xi'an University. The preschool education major was approved as a Shaanxi Provincial First-Class Construction Major in 2017, and recognized as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate major construction site under the Ministry of Education's "Double Ten Thousand Plan" in 2019. In 2022, it became the first major in Shaanxi Province to pass the Ministry of Education's Level-2 Accreditation for Teacher Education Programs. In 2024, it was authorized as a professional degree authorization point for a Master of Education (Preschool Education), and its Children's Cognitive Science and Education Promotion Laboratory was approved as a Key Laboratory of Shaanxi Provincial Higher Education Institutions. In the 2025 ShanghaiRanking's Best Chinese Universities Rankings by subject, the preschool education major was rated B+, ranking 47th among 438 undergraduate universities offering this major nationwide.
The School adheres to the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, inherits the spirit of Guanxue (Guan School), and upholds the educational philosophy of "valuing goodness and truth, pursuing extensive knowledge and profound artistry". It has formed a "kindergarten-stationed" talent cultivation model characterized by whole-process practice, the integration of theory and practice, and collaborative education. The School has won 1 National Teaching Achievement Award and 9 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. It has 2 textbooks selected as national planning textbooks and 3 as provincial planning textbooks, and won 5 Provincial Excellent Textbook Awards for Higher Education Institutions. The School has undertaken 19 provincial education reform projects, including 2 major projects and 7 key projects. It has developed 7 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses and ideological and political demonstration courses, and produced 3 provincial-level excellent cases. Six teachers have won awards in provincial teaching competitions. Over the past five years, students have won 29 first and second prizes in the "Huawen" National Preschool Normal Students' Education and Teaching Skills Test, with the school ranking second overall twice among all participating universities. Additionally, 18 students have won grand prizes and first prizes in the Shaanxi Provincial Normal Students' Education and Teaching Ability Competition.
The School actively serves the high-quality development of regional preschool education. Over the past five years, its faculty members have hosted 4 National Education Science Planning projects, 2 Humanities and Social Sciences projects of the Ministry of Education, and over 50 research projects at or above the provincial level. They have published more than 220 academic papers, including over 30 papers in authoritative journals such asEducational Research,Studies in Early Childhood Education, andXinhua Digest. Furthermore, the faculty has won 22 various scientific research awards, including the Shaanxi Provincial Outstanding Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences, and published more than 20 monographs.
